Where to find your numbers

Not sure which figures to use? Here’s where you can usually find them:

  • Ad spend – Check the “cost” column in your Google Ads or Meta Ads manager for the same date range you’re analysing.
  • Revenue – In GA4, look at “Purchases revenue” or your ecommerce report (make sure tracking is set up correctly). Some ad platforms also report attributed revenue.
  • Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) – Usually from your accounts or supplier invoices. Take the unit buy-in cost × units sold.
  • Transaction fees – Export reports from your payment provider (e.g. Stripe, PayPal, Klarna) to see fees deducted for the same orders.
  • Shipping costs – Use courier invoices or fulfilment platform reports. Be sure to include only what you paid the carrier, not what the customer was charged.
  • Returns/Refunds – Your order management system should show the total refunded value for the chosen period.
  • Packaging – Pull from supplier invoices or estimate (average £/order × orders dispatched).
  • Overheads allocation – Decide on a fair percentage of indirect costs (e.g. warehouse rent, staff time, software licences) and apply it to this activity.

Tip: keep your reporting periods consistent (e.g. last 30 days) and always use ex-VAT values so costs and revenue match.
