UK Cookies tracking for Kontrolit Customers

What are Cookies?

Cookies are small files which are stored on a user's computer. They are designed to hold a modest amount of data specific to a particular client and website, and can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer.

What is happening?

On the 26th Of May 2012 the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) imposes an EU directive design to protect internet users’ privacy. ICO Cookies PopUp

The ICO says that there are new rules that cover cookies used to:

• Provide information to advertisers
• Count the number of unique visitors to a page
• Recognise when a user has returned to a site to adjust content

If a website uses these cookies then they must provide clear and comprehensive information about their use to the visitor and allow them to decide if they would like those cookies used or not.

Why are they doing this?

They are trying to help and protect consumers.  For example let’s say we wanted to create a website selling “cheap” flights.  When a visitor (let’s call him Fred) arrives at the site and searches for a flight from London to Paris he might see a price of £100.  However the site could then put a cookie on his browser which says “he visited us and saw the London to Paris flight at £100”.  So when Fred comes back the next day to check the price and make a booking the price now says £120.  This is because the page doesn’t just load the price but also checks if they have visited before and puts the price up.

So the pricing matrix for the website for the London to Paris flight might actually be:

0 Visits - £100
1 Visit - £120
2 Visits - £150
3 Visits - £160 etc. etc.

The ICO wants to provide visitors with the chance to be able to stop this from occurring.

What does this mean for Kontrolit customers?

Kontrolit sites use cookies for a number of things, for example allowing you to remember users' login to power the shopping basket on an ecommerce site.  However Kontrolit sites do not use cookies to:

• Provide information to advertisers
• Count the number of unique visitors to a page
• Recognise when a user has returned to a site to adjust content

No action is required for Kontrolit site owners to take and we do not need to put a pop up action on your home page warning about cookies being used.

One optional action would be to update your site's Privacy Policy to point out the above information, for example;

This site does not use cookies to:

• Provide information to advertisers
• Count the number of unique visitors to a page
• Recognise when a user has returned to a site to adjust content
